David McCandless at the L2 Innovation Forum

by Giselle Carr

Last week, NYU Stern hosted the L2 Innovation Forum at The Morgan Library. The event was an incredible showcase of innovation in digital marketing and the implications for prestige brands.

The last presentation of the day was from Information is Beautiful’s David McCandless, whose infographics have been featured previously on our blog. “It seems we are all suffering from information overload,” he stated at the opening of his lecture. He claimed that the solution is to make information more beautiful through the use of design, so that we are not only reading the information but also interacting with and experiencing it in an entirely different way through the appreciation of its visual beauty. He likened today’s world to a landscape of information, and the infographics he designs as roadmaps, bringing clarity to questions and answers alike.

While some describe information as “the new oil”, a resource to be tapped into or extracted, David suggested that we consider information as “the new soil, not oil” – a fertile resource, which transforms what is planted and brings forth new possibilities. “In this connected age, you have to connect all the different numbers and sets of numbers; only then can you allow the data set to change your mindset.”
