Hire Three or Hire One? Design Managers Make the Decision an Easy One

By Holly Burns Recently, a colleague turned me onto the article “The Spectrum of User Experience,” on the Information Architects Japan website.  The article uses colorful, engaging visuals to compare how the three fields of design, business, and technology work independently as well as how they can successfully work in unison. uxd-stress-fields3 The article argues that workers in these fields can’t get along when working together but the only way to create engaging, user-friendly products is by somehow coming up with a way to make workers in these separate industries communicate and collaborate.  This could lead to a dilemma for some companies.  There are multiple ways to tackle this challenge, one of which being that companies could make their decision simple and hire a single person who excels in all three arenas (technology, design, and business)!  This person would be a tech-savvy Design Manager!  The decision seems simple and what good timing, too, because budgets are tight these days! If your wallet can support all three professionals, check out The Creative Priority by Jerry Hirshberg for ideas on how to improve communication between different experts.
