Energy requirements per person in modern times are 60 times higher than our ancestors. According to scientific experts, the world needs to endure a ‘factor 20 reduction’ in its energy and resource metabolism — to five percent of present levels if we want a sustainable future.  Designer and theorist John Thackara explores how we can design our way into a thriving five percent, even as populations rise.
