On July 7, 2011 Pratt Institute lost a wonderful teacher, an amazing mentor, an inspiring role model, an admirable colleague, and a great friend. Monica Shay touched the lives of a countless number of students and colleagues.
With an infectious smile and a happy-go-lucky take on life, Monica had been working at Pratt for more than a decade. Serving as the director of the Arts and Cultural Management program, she was very active and practiced what she preached—establishing programs that bring the arts to communities.
Her untimely and disheartening death left the community shocked and deeply saddened, but tears quickly turned to laughter as students shared their best memories and favorite Monica moments at a vigil on the eve of her passing. Finding joy in anything and practicing laughter as the best medicine, a little bit of Monica was alive in each and every one of the participants that evening.
It is only appropriate that we continue to honor her endless contributions and inspire others just as she did for so many over the years. Pratt Institute has established a Scholarship Fund in memory of Professor Monica Shay. Please donate so individuals who may not otherwise have the chance, can carry out all the incredible work Monica had established, as well as continue to teach and inspire others through her teachings everyday.
