Pro bono work is sometimes pegged as “free work” that discredits the value of design; however, some social and environmental organizations, such as those highlighted in Catalyst, depend on donated services to operate on meager budgets. In his article, Pentagram designer and adjunct professor, Joe Marianek, presents nine guidelines for pro bono work. The article touches on the professional benefits of the practice as well as some rules of thumb to consider when donating design services to a non-profit.
