I came across this inspiring resource while reading Paul Hawken’s book “Blessed Unrest”: http://www.wiserearth.org/ Hawken and a team of researchers who spent years gathering a comprehensive list of non-profit organizations from around the world launched Wiser Earth in 2007. The team recognized the value of connecting people and organizations that are championing similar causes. As expressed on their website, “Our effectiveness to prevent harm and institute positive change is undermined by our lack of collective awareness, duplication of efforts, and poor connectivity.”
Capitalizing on web 2.0, the team developed a hub of more than 110,000 organizations and 30,000 members, all interested in and committed to social, environmental and economic sustainability. The site enables visitors to join, search, support and learn from local and international organizations. There’s even an interactive map on which you can specify an address or zip code and find local organizations, people, jobs and events: http://www.wiserearth.org/content/proximity_map
