Make it happen.
DMI Design/Management Thinking
23 June 21-22, 2011 W Hotel, Seattle, USA

Co-chairs: Jesse James Garrett, President, Adaptive Path?Kaaren Hansen, Director of Experience Design, Intuit?Surya Vanka, Principal UX Manager, Microsoft?Thomas Lockwood, President, DMI.

We know quite well the value of Design to business, and Design Thinking to problem solving. But what remains a bit fuzzy for many organizations is the distance between thinking and doing—the proverbial gap between strategic intent and execution. Or, how to make it happen. This year’s design thinking conference will focus on closing the gap—and moving from design thinking to design doing. We will explore key methods, strategies and successful techniques to embed design thinking in the corporate culture, drive change in behaviors, and integrate the customer experience to help organizations achieve new growth. This will be supported by a blend of proven methods and case studies, and by a blend of consultant teams, in-house leaders and forward thinking educators. All with one result in mind: Make it happen. “Making it happen” requires several key competencies. We will look at this challenge from a sense-making point of view, with a focus on what actually to do.

We will use a combination of learning from the trenches, case results and academic research to demonstrate various methods and strategies in key areas, including:
1. Organizational change: Understanding corporate culture & organizational structures, power and authority, preparing the organization at large for change, and levers to pull to drive lasting change.

2. Design Thinking Methods and mindsets: Integrating design thinking into the organization; up, down and sideways!

3. Role of Design Management: To move to doing requires design management methods—how to develop the right organization, and the right mix of internal / external resources.

4. Values of Design: We will present and discuss a model of the core values of design, can the design community rally? For two intense and invigorating days, you’ll gain invaluable design thinking insights, tools, inspiration, and peer-to-peer connections. Leave with the frameworks and tools to Make it happen. Join us this June in Seattle!
