Call for Entries: Recharge New York with desigNYC in 2012

desigNYC’s 2012 design competition call for nonprofit projects and pro bono designers is now open! Recharging Communities is the organizations third annual initiative is set to revitalize local communities and improve lives through the power of design. desigNYC is seeking to connect extraordinary nonprofit organizations with talented design professionals in project collaborations that will strengthen New York neighborhoods. Recharging Communities: desigNYC’s Call for Nonprofit Projects and Pro Bono Designers is accepting submissions until THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2011, 5:00 PM E.S.T.

desigNYC brings the skills of architectural, landscape, interior, experience and communications designers to local organizations to respond to issues affecting New Yorkers and the communities in which they live, work, and play. Through Recharging Communities, desigNYC will support projects that aim to improve sustainability, health, diversity, livability, vitality and economic renewal in New York communities. In past years desigNYC has facilitated collaborations focused on providing better housing and public places, extending the reach of communication systems and knowledge networks, and combating food scarcity and health, among many others.

In 2009, a group of design leaders in NYC came together to explore how they might tap into the design for social change movement to improve the lives of New Yorkers. Rather than work on global issues, they were drawn to local issues needing local design solutions. They were convinced that through a collaborative design process, community could be built and social capital could be increased. They established desigNYC with a clear mission; to improve the lives of New Yorkers through the power of design. It’s a straightforward mission that can only be achieved through strategic design, delivered through communities, organizations, and designers working together.
